Forged Components Quality Standards

FCI consistently meets or exceeds the quality standards set ASME, Association of Mechanical Engineers.

Founded in 1880, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is a longstanding standards-developing organization in the United States. ASME’s main function is to develop and regulate standards for a wide range of technical areas, such as:

Fasteners, Plumbing Fixtures, Elevators, Pipelines, Power Plant Systems and Components, Compressors, Cranes & Hoists, Environmental Control, Pressure Vessels, Pumps, Storage Tanks, and Turbines.

These standards govern the design, manufacture, inspection, installation, and testing of various equipment and parts.

One of the standards set by ASME focuses on forgings, specifically ASME B16.11. This standard provides specifications for the ratings, dimensions, tolerances, marking, and material requirements of forged fittings. These fittings can be either socket weld or threaded, and the allowable materials include carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel.

ASME has additional standards specific to carbon steel forgings for piping applications. SA 105 deals with carbon steel forgings for general piping purposes, while SA 181 covers carbon steel forgings for general-purpose piping.

In terms of alloy and stainless steel fittings and parts for high-temperature service, ASME has established SA 182 as the standard. This standard pertains to the manufacture of forged or rolled alloy and stainless steel pipe flanges, fittings, valves, and other components that are required to withstand high temperatures.

For pipe connections in Class 150 and 300 ranges that follow ASME specifications, ASME B16.5 is the relevant standard. This standard defines the standard facing, which has a thickness of 0.06 inches, and includes specifications regarding the length of the face.

Another standard introduced by ASME is ASME SB-381, which deals with the production of annealed titanium and titanium forgings.

In addition to these specific standards, ASME also has a more general standard that establishes the definition of terms and features unique to casting and forging technologies.
